When Frederick the Great had his new castle, Sanssouci, built near Berlin in 1745, he also commissioned the creation of a special new dinnerware set. At this time, architecture and interior design were seen as intrinsically linked. With its delicate lattice structure, the relief on the Sanssouci porcelain tableware by Rosenthal matches the rococo stucco on the ceiling of the Great Hall in Sanssouci Palace. This tableware was tremendously popular and was imitated by a number of manufacturers at the time. It was only Rosenthal, however, that acquired an official license from the Royal Porcelain Factory in 1894 to produce exact replicas of this tableware set. It has never been changed and, to this day, it is still a faithful tribute to The Old Fritz.
